Lapai, Abubakar Isah Mokwa, a postgraduate student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, has been arrested for allegedly criticizing Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State. Mokwa, who is of the Department of Agricultural Economy and Extension, was reportedly arrested by the police at an off-campus lodge in Lapai, on Thursday. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities as part of its efforts to strengthen academic relevance and align higher education with global trends. The commission announced the addition of the programmes to the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) in a circular addressed to all vice-chancellors. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that 172 people have died from Lassa fever across the country so far in 2025. In its latest situation report released on Tuesday, the agency said a total of 924 confirmed cases have been recorded as of epidemiological week 40.
