Alaafin of oyo calls for justice over killings of yoruba natives in kwara

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has urged Nigerians to unite against the perpetrators of recent killings in Oke-Ode, Kwara State, whom he described as “blood guzzlers and enemies of the state.” The violence, which led to the deaths of Yoruba natives, is suspected to have been carried out by Fulani herdsmen.

This appeal was made in a statement issued to journalists in Oyo by the monarch’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye.

The Alaafin expressed his concern over the recurring herder-related violence in Oke-Ode, noting that the Yoruba and Fulani peoples have lived together harmoniously for decades without such hostility.

He revealed that he has already been in contact with the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, regarding the matter and to discuss possible measures to prevent further attacks.

While commending the security agencies for their commitment, the traditional ruler urged the Federal Government to ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified and prosecuted as a deterrent.

“Government, political leaders, and followers must have the courage and honesty to get to the root causes of our insecurity, now worsened by criminality, insurgency, and terrorism by herdsmen,” the Alaafin stated.

He emphasised that “security should not be taken for granted. Immediate and conscious efforts must be made to design and build a robust system capable of creating a stable and peaceful environment for national development.”

The Alaafin further highlighted that his forebears had made land available for cattle ranching within the Oyo Empire, even providing additional acres to Fulani herdsmen free of charge to foster unity.

He added that historically, disputes between farmers and herders were resolved through dialogue, consensus-building, and peace mechanisms entrenched in Yoruba culture.

However, he issued a strong warning against any actions that threaten peace and stability, assuring residents of his continued dedication to the protection of lives and property across the region.
