The Ogun State Government has vowed to sanction seven companies for alleged environmental pollution in Veepee Avenue, Sango Ota, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

The companies which included Purechem Manufacturing Limited, Olympic Inks/Salient Industries, Ecomed Pharmaceuticals Limited, Nigerian Distilleries Limited, Industrial Mineral Products, Bhumee Inks Limited, and Classic Soap Industries Nigeria Limited, were found guilty of discharging untreated effluents to the community.

This development was made known on Tuesday in a post made on X.com by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency.

The polluters are to face the recommended sanctions for the environmental harm done in the community after they were exposed through an investigation by the Ogun State Ministry of Environment.

“A recent investigation by the @Moeogunstate and the Office of the Special Adviser (Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency) has found several companies in Veepee Avenue, Sango Ota, culpable of discharging untreated effluents into the Ten Acres Association Community.

“The investigation, conducted between June 14 and 19, 2024, revealed that companies such as Purechem Manufacturing Ltd, Olympic Inks/Salient Industries, Ecomed Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Nigerian Distilleries Ltd, Industrial Mineral Products, Bhumee Inks Ltd and Classic Soap Industries Nigeria Ltd were guilty of environmental pollution.

“The report recommends stern action against the companies, including treating their effluents before discharge and channelling them into the agreed gorge within the community. The companies are also to be sanctioned for their environmental violations.”

It was gathered that the reports and recommendations from the Director of Inspection and Compliance Monitoring, Osinaike, had been submitted to the Special Adviser to the Governor, Oluwadare Kehinde for consideration and approval.

In July that residents and traders in Ibafo, Ogun State, accused Country Kitchen restaurant of environmental pollution due to poor waste management, which they feared might lead to a cholera outbreak in the area.

Our correspondent who visited the community observed that the restaurant discharged liquid waste with a foul smell from its premises to the community’s drainage daily, posing a threat to both their daily activities and health.
