AIICO Insurance Plc, a prominent non-banking financial services provider in Nigeria, finds itself entangled in 34 legal disputes while experiencing a significant increase in directors’ compensations and allowances, soaring by 38.54% between March 2023 and March 2024.

According to the insurer’s first-quarter financial report for 2024, the company remains undeterred by the legal challenges, asserting that they pose no substantial threat to its operations. Despite facing claims totaling approximately N2.33 billion, AIICO remains confident in its legal stance, as outlined in its financial statement submitted to the Nigerian Exchange Group.

The company highlighted ongoing legal battles with entities such as Megamond Investment Limited and Indemnity Finance Limited, spanning several years. These disputes, including efforts to recover outstanding loans and property disputes, continue to unfold within the Nigerian legal system.

Meanwhile, AIICO Insurance witnessed a notable surge in director compensation during the first quarter of 2024. Total allowances and compensations for directors surged by 38.54%, reaching N126.651 million compared to N91.418 million in the corresponding period of 2023.

Additionally, the chairman’s earnings spiked by 167%, rising to N4 million in Q1 of 2024 from N1.5 million in the same period of 2023. The highest-paid director’s earnings skyrocketed from N1.028 million in Q1 of 2023 to N62.230 million in the twelve months leading to Q1 of 2024.

Despite the challenges and legal entanglements, AIICO Insurance demonstrated robust financial performance. Revenue surged by 53% to N22.669 billion from N14.839 billion in Q1 of 2023, with profits jumping by 512% to N8.786 billion from N1.434 billion in the same period.

However, the Nigerian insurance industry continues to grapple with low penetration rates, with only 0.5% of the population insured and significant gaps in coverage for vehicles and health. Leadway Assurance identifies key challenges facing the sector, including pricing issues, poor product-market alignment, distribution channel inadequacies, and low public confidence.
