FCTA Issues Three-Month Ultimatum on Abandoned Buildings , Undeveloped Plots

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has expressed concern over the increasing number of shanties and squatters taking over abandoned and uncompleted buildings, as well as undeveloped plots across the capital city.

The situation, which has led to growing security risks, has prompted the Administration to issue a strict directive to property owners to take immediate action.

Chief Felix Obuah, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) Coordinator, highlighted the security threats posed by these abandoned structures. “These buildings and undeveloped plots have become hideouts for men of questionable character, thereby posing a serious security challenge to the residents of the FCT,” Obuah noted. He stressed that urgent steps are needed to mitigate the situation and restore order.

As part of its measures, the FCT Administration is giving property owners a three-month ultimatum to develop and secure their properties. Owners of these abandoned and uncompleted buildings, as well as those with undeveloped plots, have been directed to take necessary steps to prevent their properties from being misused. “All owners must act promptly to develop and secure their properties within the specified timeframe,” Chief Obuah stated.

Failure to comply with this directive may lead to severe consequences. The FCT Administration has made it clear that any property owner who fails to meet the three-month deadline risks having their land titles revoked. Additionally, such properties may be subject to demolition, according to the AMMC Coordinator. “We will not hesitate to take appropriate action, including revocation of titles and demolition of these abandoned structures,” Obuah warned.

This move is part of the FCT Administration’s broader effort to enhance security and ensure orderly urban development across the capital city. The rapid expansion of illegal settlements has been a growing concern for both residents and authorities, with fears that these areas could become breeding grounds for criminal activity.

The FCT Administration is urging all stakeholders to comply with the directive and work together to maintain the city’s security and integrity. By addressing the issue of abandoned and undeveloped properties, the Administration aims to create a safer, more orderly environment for all residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
